News from Dr. Cruz: National Library Week

Team AISD,

Our school librarians offer a gateway to worlds of information. They are often the “brains” of a school, providing technology support, information and guidance to teachers as well as students to support academic achievement at all levels. During National Library Week, I want to thank all of our school librarians for all they do.

This week, I introduced Akins High School senior Valentina Tovar at Mayor Steve Adler’s inaugural State of the City address. The mayor highlighted the importance of education in the city’s continued growth and success.

As he noted, Austin has grown and developed tremendously in the past two decades. Our district, too, has made great strides. Graduation rates are at an all-time high. Many of our schools place among the top in national rankings.

But as a city and as a school district, we also face common challenges. And we must work together to address them.  As the cost of living in Austin soars, affordability has become a significant issue for our families and for our school district.

Last year, the city stepped up to the plate to provide support for our district’s most vulnerable students and families. The city council approved $1.25 million to help us engage parents and connect our low-income families to the community resources they desperately need.

I look forward to working with Mayor Adler and our city leaders as we continue to develop partnerships and common solutions that will lead to an even brighter future for our city and our school district.
