News from Dr. Cruz: Giving Thanks and Giving Back

Team AISD,

I spent this sunny Tuesday morning carrying coats and stacking food with elementary, middle and high school students from 26 of our campuses. These students spent two weeks collecting donated goods while learning about poverty, homelessness and hunger.

Now, they were giving these items to the Capital Area Food Bank and Junior League of Austin’s Coats for Kids project during a Day of Service.

The Day of Service was sponsored by Legacy of Giving, a nonprofit organization that encourages students to make philanthropy part of their lives. It is a reminder that the youngest members of our community can and do make a difference. The experience helps students understand how social issues like poverty and hunger affect real people in their community.

The students participating in the Day of Service were having fun and helping at the same time. It felt good to know that they are developing good hearts as well as strong minds.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I hope you’ll experience gratitude and joy with loved ones. I remember having my family and both sets of grandparents over to our house with all 10 of us crowded around one table (without a kiddie table!). We would all take turns letting others know why we were thankful.

Have a safe and restful Thanksgiving holiday!
