Message from the Board President

On Friday, March 28, Vincent Torres, president of the Board of Trustees, provided the following message to AISD employees, families and community members about Superintendent Meria Carstarphen being named as the sole finalist to lead Atlanta Public Schools:

Dear AISD Community,

Yesterday, Austin ISD Superintendent Meria Carstarphen was named as the sole finalist to lead Atlanta Public Schools. Although not yet final, her pending departure is bittersweet. We are grateful to Dr. Carstarphen for her service to our district and know Atlanta will benefit from her strong leadership in the years ahead.

Dr. Carstarphen joined AISD five years ago, just as I was entering my third year as one of your elected trustees on the school board. Under her leadership, our school district has made significant progress during the past five years—from achieving an all-time high graduation rate to maximizing dwindling resources wisely to ensure Austin schools offer all of our students the quality education they deserve to prepare for college, career and life.

We thank Dr. Carstarphen, her leadership team and all of our teachers and team members for the achievements and positive progress during the past five years, which has made AISD a nationally recognized school district for its commitment to educating the whole child and every child. AISD continues to move in the right direction and will continue to support our schools as they work to increase students’ performance.

If the superintendent accepts the opportunity to lead Atlanta Public Schools, we will work with Dr. Carstarphen and the district’s well-respected leadership team to ensure a smooth transition.

We will also make it our priority to provide the community with timely updates about the board’s next steps, including the process for a search for a new superintendent to lead Austin’s public schools. Our work and discussion begin Monday, when the Board of Trustees meets in executive session to discuss next steps.

Thank you for all that you do to support AISD and public education in Austin. I look forward to working with you as we begin this next chapter together.

Sincerely,

Vincent Torres

AISD Board President
