Board President's Update Aug. 7

Dear Austin ISD Community,

Today I'd like to provide an update on the search for a permanent superintendent to lead our district. While the board of trustees did not meet in July, community members were very active in providing input about the qualities they’re seeking in a new superintendent for Austin ISD.

AISD held 15 districtwide community forums at 13 locations, 52 smaller stakeholder meetings, more than 60 telephone interviews and one Tele-Town Hall in which 14,000 people participated. A representative group of students will have the opportunity to share their input later this month through social media and telephone and online surveys.

To date, more than 1,500 members of the community have responded to an online survey—available in EnglishSpanish and Vietnamese—that is open until 8 a.m. Aug. 18. I encourage you to participate by visiting the superintendent search page of the district’s website.

Numerous community groups and civic leaders have been contacted and interviewed for their feedback. A list of the individuals and groups that participated in these small group discussions is posted on the district website.

Our executive search consultants have collected this community input and are using it to develop a profile of the qualities we are seeking in a superintendent. This profile will serve as their guide as we promote the position, recruit candidates and begin to narrow the pool of applicants.

The deadline to apply for the position is Sept. 22. After reviewing the candidate pool and narrowing down our selection, the board will hold the first round of interviews in mid-October. In early November, we will hold the second round of interviews and plan to host public forums with the finalists.

The goal is to be prepared to take action on a contract with the new superintendent by Dec. 15. Following this timeline, a new superintendent could begin work in AISD early next year.

I’d like to thank the thousands of people who have taken the time out of their summer to participate in the community forums, stakeholder meetings and online surveys. Please continue to check our superintendent search website for the most up-to-date news and information and continue to stay involved with this process in the coming months.
Sincerely,

Vincent Torres
President
