Overview

Austin Independent School District’s Physical Education and Health Department educates students to become lifelong learners of health and wellness by participating in activities that develop behaviors which encourage healthy decision-making, appropriate social skills, and lifelong physical fitness in and outside of the educational setting.  The Physical Education and Health Department’s goal is to graduate students who are proficient in physical literacy as well as health literacy.  Health and Physical Education are integral parts of the total education of every child in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. 

AISD is committed to the development of the whole child.  All campuses participate in the Coordinated School Health (CSH) initiative.  CSH is a systemic approach of advancing student academic performance by promoting, practicing and coordinating school health education and services for the benefit and well-being of students in establishing healthy behaviors designed to last their lifetime.  As an example of the district's committment to CSH, the Board of Trustees approved a policy stating all elementary students will have 30 minutes of recess daily.

All 3rd - 12th grade students enrolled in a PE or PE substitution are required to take  the Fitnessgram assessment.  The assessment includes a variety of health-related physical fitness tests that assess aerobic capacity; muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility; and body composition. Scores from these assessments are compared to Healthy Fitness Zone® standards to determine students' overall physical fitness and suggest areas for improvement when appropriate.  Parents can request a copy of their student's Fitnessgram Report from their Physical Education teacher.  More information about the Fitnessgram Assessment can be found on the Texas Education Agency Assessment Manual.
