Austin ISD and STAAR test: Summer School Impact

The Texas Commissioner of Education recently announced the cancellation of the June STAAR SSI test administration for grades 5 and 8 due to ongoing reporting issues with the state's testing vendor.

"It is unfortunate that ETS continues to have data integrity issues as we use STAAR data as one of our markers for tracking student progress," said Edmund Oropez, Chief Officer for Teaching and Learning. "We appreciate TEA's continued efforts to ensure that students and campuses are not negatively affected."

Students who are currently enrolled in summer school are expected to complete the summer school sessions as scheduled in order to receive support in math and/or reading.

According to the statement from TEA, "Even though state requirements have been waived, districts are still encouraged to use local discretion to determine on an individual basis whether accelerated instruction should be offered to support students. Districts will not be required to convene Grade Placement Committees but are encouraged to use all relevant and available academic information to make promotion decisions."
