National Board Certification Program
Austin ISD is proud there are currently 213 active National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) working in various roles across the district—more than any other school district in the state of Texas. In addition, 111 teachers are currently working on their components for certification and should complete in the next two years. Austin ISD supports the NBCT program by funding the fees for the components, providing cohort support through current NBCTs, and paying a stipend each year the teacher is National Board Certified. Austin ISD also supports the recertification process and fees.
The National Board program is designed to promote excellence in teaching through intense self reflection and study of practice. Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is one of the most significant achievements a teacher can attain. The district has a long history of supporting teachers in achieving National Board certification, with the first cohort of 10 teachers earning their certification in 2000. Austin ISD continues to lead the state and is recognized as one of the top 20 districts in the nation for the total number of new National Board certified teachers.
A National Board certified teacher (NBCT) is a teacher who has achieved the highest professional credential in the field of teaching. The certification process is a means to professional growth and improvement, and many candidates describe the process as one of the most meaningful professional experiences in which they have participated. Teachers who choose to participate in this voluntary certification program document their practices through rigorous reflection and analysis against nationally, established standards of what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. In doing so, they challenge themselves to improve their teaching skills, which in turn benefits their schools and their community.
As a testament to the program, teachers who have received certification have also snagged coveted teaching awards. AISD has had four NBTCs receive the Milken Family Foundation Award, hailed as the ”Oscars of Teaching” by Teacher Magazine. Teachers who have achieved certification have also earned or won numerous other awards, including the Disney American Teacher Award, Teacher(s) of the Year, HEB Teaching Awards and honors/recognitions bestowed by professional subject area associations.
