Austin ISD fifth-grader Kevin Lopez is wise beyond his years. Kevin attends Barbara Jordan Elementary School and earned fourth place in this year's citywide MLK Oratory Competition.
Kevin recited his speech at the AISD Martin Luther King Jr. celebration and shared that his vision is a world without walls.
"We should knock down those big metal walls—walls of oppression, walls of humiliation, walls of separation. We want family and community," he said.
As we prepare students for life after graduation, we have a responsibility to help them develop the integrity, compassion and drive to tear down walls. To become thoughtful, civically minded community leaders.
Martin Luther King Jr. famously said, “Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.”
You help achieve that goal every time you reject prejudice and encourage compassion. Thank you for your dedication to building character and community.
