News from Dr. Cruz: The impact of literacy

Team AISD,

Literacy is fundamental to building a strong educational foundation, and I'm proud of the work our staff has done to make it a priority.

The impact of literacy goes beyond an English or literature class; it affects all content areas. Focusing on literacy instruction, and monitoring the development of reading components like phonics and fluency, helps ensure students have what they need to excel in all subjects.

October is National Dyslexia Awareness Month, and a good time to recognize the specialized literacy resources that AISD provides. At the beginning of the school year, a full-time reading specialist was placed on every elementary school campus. These specialists can provide individualized support to any student, and many are Certified Academic Language Therapists who are trained in dyslexia intervention techniques.

Students come to our classrooms with a range of talents and abilities, and it's important for our district to provide tailored approaches to learning. The lasting effect this investment will have on thousands of students is just one way AISD is preparing them for college, career and life.
