AISD's Brown Elementary School is one of 12 statewide recipients of an H-E-B "Healthy Campus" grant. The 3-year, $15,000 grant will help the elementary campus maintain programs that promote a healthy lifestyle, while developing nutrition and activity-based instruction. To earn this grant, Brown demonstrated its robust plan for actively promoting H-E-B’s three pillars of health: food, body and life. Examples include improving school lunch offerings, weaving nutrition into the curriculum, incorporating physical activity throughout the school day and offering a health risk assessment for children.

The campus was selected by a panel of fitness and nutrition experts from The Oliver Foundation, ACTIVE Life, the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Department of State Health Services, and the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

For 10 years, H-E-B has rewarded teachers, principals, superintendents and campuses for outstanding leadership and teaching through Excellence in Education. Last year, H-E-B added this new category to recognize campuses that place a high priority on health and wellness.

About H-E-B Excellence in Education Healthy Campus Grant: The H-E-B Excellence in Education Healthy Campus grant is designed to assist school campuses with resources and funding to increase health and nutrition education for their students. Grant monies are awarded to develop, implement and improve activities and programs centered around the three pillars of H-E-B’s statewide health improvement effort: Food, Body and Life.
