Board President's Update, Aug. 22

Dear Austin ISD Community,

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Back to School Bash last week. I especially would like to thank the more than 300 parents, students and community members who completed the superintendent search survey at the event.

Since June, more than 2,000 Austin ISD community members completed the survey, sharing their feedback about the characteristics the new superintendent should possess.

Ray and Associates, the search firm hired by the board, compiled the feedback from the surveys (1,863 online and 172 hard copies), as well as comments from the community engagement meetings in July and from the district’s website to develop a superintendent profile that matches the unique needs of Austin.

Based on Austin’s highest-ranking qualities, the district’s new leader will be a superintendent who:

  • possesses the leadership skills required to respond to the challenges presented by an ethnically and culturally diverse community;
  • is strongly committed to a student first philosophy in all decisions; and
  • inspires trust, has high levels of self-confidence and optimism, and models high standards of integrity and personal performance.

I invite you to review the final report prepared by the search firm, along with the flyer they will use to promote the position nationally.

After reviewing the feedback from the survey, it became clear to me that there is a wide range of interests and desires in the Austin community. As Austin ISD trustees, it is our job to find balance for the benefit of the district as a whole. We are leaving no stone unturned, and I am confident that the search firm will find the right candidates for us.

Please note that the superintendent search will be discussed at the first regular board meeting of the school year Tuesday, Aug. 26. You’re welcome to share your feedback with the board during Citizens Communication at the meeting, through the superintendent search website or directly via email.

I wish all students and parents a successful start to the school year. Please visit the district’s Back to School webpage for information and updates.

Sincerely,

Vincent Torres
President
Austin ISD Board of Trustees
