Dr. Cruz: Remembering Our Fallen Heroes this Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.  This year, I hope everyone in our school community—students, staff and families—will take a few moments to reflect on the meaning of the day and to be mindful of the sacrifices that others have made so that we can enjoy the freedoms they protected.

Each of us can honor and remember our soldiers past and present by visiting the memorials of those who have fought to protect our country and by supporting veterans in our own communities. We can pay our respects to the families and friends who have lost loved ones in the service of our country.

Wherever you are at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 26,  observe the national Moment of Remembrance. Throughout the country, in this shared remembrance, we connect as Americans in honor of our fallen.

On Saturday and Sunday, May 24 and 25, learn about World War II by seeing the reenactment of battles at the Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry. Admission is free. Shows are at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

On May 26, at the State Capitol, there will be a free  A Cappella concert at noon and you can visit the Texas Capital Vietnam Veterans Monument, which was dedicated on March 29, 2014.

Wishing you a meaningful Memorial Day holiday.

Regards,
Paul Cruz, Ph.D.
Interim Superintendent
