Lanier Senior Takes Gold at State Wrestling Championship

Lanier High School Senior Andrey Diaz made the news last Saturday when she competed in and took home the gold at the UIL State Wrestling Championship—the most advanced level of competition for high school wrestlers in Texas.

"Winning the state championship meant a lot to me. It showed me that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to doing if I set goals and work hard," Diaz said. "I trained hard everyday, but could not have done this without the help of my teammates and coach. They really pushed me hard and never let me give up, even on those days when I wanted to stop."

This is not the first time Lanier has achieved victory in this arena. In 2002, Tabithia Ramsey made history when she she outperformed her peers, placing first at the state wrestling competition.

In addition to Diaz, senior Gwen Sanabria also performed well at the meet, taking home sixth place in her wrestling category.

The efforts of Diaz, Sanabria and the rest of the team placed Lanier in the 13th position out of the 56 teams who competed. Austin ISD congratulates these Lanier athletes for their exceptional efforts.
