Recent Bowie High School graduate, Carl Heiser earned a third place Bronze medal in News Writing at the May 21 State University Interscholastic League academic contest. Heiser was Austin's only state finisher in the 5A category. 



In the last four years, Heiser has finished among the top six contestants in UIL Journalism at the district and regional levels. This was Heiser's first year to place at the State level. Throughout his high school career, Heiser wrote news, features and editorials for the campus newspaper, The Lone Star Dispatch. Heiser’s participation in UIL events also allowed him to letter in journalism (earn a letter jacket).

This fall, Heiser will attend Austin Community College and plans to take the mandatory necessary undergraduate course work necessary to transfer to a four-year university.

"Carl has not claimed a major field of study yet, but mass communications or English are both good bets for him as he has become an accomplished writer. Not only has he mastered all forms of journalism writing stylistically following the Associated Press Stylebook, but he writes creative fiction as well. He has been hard at work writing a novel for the past year," said newspaper advisor and UIL journalism coach Donna Marie Miller.

Heiser was recognized by the AISD Board of Trustees at the June 18 Regular Board Meeting.

About UIL Journalism: The University Interscholastic League (UIL) competition is an on-site academic contest with students competing within a space of 45 minutes by writing stories using a prompt and quotes. The categories are news writing, feature writing, editorial writing and headline writing.
