CURRICULUM

The district curriculum, for Prekindergarten, is closely tied to the guidelines issued by the State of Texas for all students. Prekindergarten students receive instruction in all of the areas of language and literacy, mathematics, social studies, science, technology, health, visual arts, music, and physical education to prepare them for success in kindergarten. Emphasis is placed on:

  • Language and concept development
  • Development of problem solving skills
  • Promotion of interest and joy in learning
  • Provision of ample opportunities for self-expression and divergent thinking
  • Development of responsibility and self-control
  • Promotion of feelings of security and success.

Prekindergarten teachers are provided a state-adopted curriculum that integrates subject areas and concepts throughout a strong literacy development program.  The curriculum requirements are aligned with the District curriculum initiative, pre-K through grade 12.

 

HOW CHILDREN LEARN

Learning centers are an integral part of the prekindergarten program. Learning centers provide growth experiences for prekindergarten students in a manner that motivates learning. A learning center is an area within the room that contains manipulatives and/or equipment to enhance learning. Items are chosen to support to teaching, reinforcing, and enriching skills and concepts related to the state suggested guidelines for prekindergarten. As the needs for the children grow and change, centers are changed to meet the needs of students. Through centers, students learn about new academic concepts as well as self-responsibility, how to follow directions, complete tasks, share materials, and communicate their needs. Some examples of learning centers in the prekindergarten classroom include:

  • Home living
  • Creative dramatics
  • Blocks
  • Manipulatives
  • Science
  • Listening
  • Art
  • Library
  • Alphabet centers
  • Writing
  • Storytelling/puppets
  • Pocket chart and poetry
  • Mathematics
