Awards & Recognition

AISD continues to be recognized both nationally and locally for its innovative work, improviding student achievement and talented, dedicated team members. Here are some recent highlights:

Award Winning District

  • AISD elementary and middle school students made gains on STAAR in every subject area!
  • Austin ISD Post-Secondary Enrollment Rates Increase for the Class of 2011
  • AISD Leads Big 8 in Percentage of Schools Achieving AYP
  • On the new End of Course exams, our students ranked #1 in reading, writing and Algebra compared to all of the other Big 8 urban school districts.
  • Amid increasing No Child Left Behind standards for all student groups, AISD had the highest campus passing rate for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) compared to all of the other Big 8 urban school districts!
  • On our Nation’s Report Card, AISD ranked first in the nation in 8th grade mathematics and second in the nation in 4th grade math, compared to all NAEP urban districts.
  • AISD Students Outscored State Average on ACT and SAT
  • Graduation rates in 2011 increased by nearly 2 percentage points to 80%.
  • Achievement gaps between student groups in AISD have narrowed by nearly one half since 2003 and more students are applying -- and ready -- for college. Post-secondary enrollment rates for AISD graduates went up a whopping five percentage points to 67%! 
  • For the second year in a row, AISD earned the Meritorious Budget Award for excellence in budget presentation from the National Association of School Business Officials. The district also earned a Gold Leadership Circle Award for financial transparency from the Texas Comptroller for the third year in a row.

Award Winning Educators

  • Matt Earhart and Donna Houser (pictured above) were named AISD Teacher of the Year and AISD Principal of the Year.
  • Diana Luna, Head Custodian at Cunningham Elementary, was named 2012 AISD Classified Staff Member of the Year.
  • The following AISD departments received national recognition by the Council of Great City Schools for being a top performer: transportation, child nutrition, maintenance and safety and security.
  • AISD Police were a recognized agency by the Texas Police Chiefs’ Association for demonstrating 186 best practices. Our police department was the first school district in the state to meet this rigorous standard.
  • David Edwards, Overton Elementary teacher, was selected as a semi-finalist for the "Live! with Kelly" television program’s Top Teacher Search.
  • Tracy Lunoff, Health Services Supervisor, was named runner up in the Austin 2012 Fit Company Challenge.
  • Laine Leibick, Highland Park Elementary teacher, won the elementary school lifetime achievement award from H-E-B, receiving $25,000 in cash as well as $25,000 for her school.
  • Michelle Brown, O. Henry Middle School teacher, traveled to Antarctica as part of the PolarTREC research team.
  • Jackie Porter, AISDs Director of Early Childhood, was awarded the Jeannette Watson Advocate Award for her contributions to Austin’s young children.
  • Pamela Hall, AISD Director of Human Resources, was named Personnel Administrator of the Year by the Texas Association of School Personnel Administrators.
  • Lynn Davis Pool, AISD Assistant Athletic Director, was inducted into the Texas Girls Coaches Association 2012 Hall of Fame.
