Advancement Via Individual Determination

Determined to Succeed

AVID—Advancement Via Individual Determination—is a program designed to support students who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. AVID educators prepare students to succeed in high school, college and other postsecondary opportunities.

At the elementary level, AVID students learn the habits, behaviors and strategies that are necessary to be successful in school. AVID students learn to write, inquire, collaborate, organize and read at the desired level, and they learn how to build partnerships for lifelong success. AVID also helps elementary students build awareness of their strengths and areas for growth. They learn to accept a culture of high expectations and how to set, monitor and celebrate goals.

At the secondary level, AVID targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college and are capable of completing a rigorous curriculum using the will to work hard. An elective at the secondary level, AVID requires students to tackle their schools’ toughest courses, such as those in the advanced placement program.
