UT Dell Medical Center construction
Parking and general traffic maneuverability has been severely affected for the past few years by the construction of the UT Dell Medical School. Phase 1 of that construction is thankfully close to a finish, but routine Austin traffic in the immediate vicinity is now affecting the area.
AISD strongly encourages all families and friends to use the district's free shuttles to get to and from your graduate's ceremony. It is important that you plan on arriving early and be prepared to be re-routed by the Austin Police Department at several intersections.
For those who decide to drive, the closest parking options are Lot 108 just south of the Erwin Center and Lot 118 at the intersection of the southbound I-35 feeder road and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, just north of the building. These lots can ONLY be entered from the southbound feeder road of I-35 and fill up quickly early in the day. A $12 fee will be charged to park here.
Portions of Lot 118 will not be available to the public during business hours as this lot is used by UT staff and employees. The entire lot will be available after 5:45 p.m. on weekdays and all day on Saturday, June 3.
The Trinity parking garage located across Red River Street from the Erwin Center at the intersection of MLK and Trinity is the next closest parking area to the Erwin Center. Entrance to this garage is only allowed from Trinity Street when congestion increases.
Other parking options include:
- The Health Center Garage is a new parking garage located at the intersection of Trinity and 15th streets.
- state parking garages along Trinity Street between 15th Street and MLK. These garages will not allow parking before 5 p.m.
- garage at the intersection of MLK and Speedway
- Manor Road garage on Robert Dedman Drive
All are pay garages and charge $12 to park. All of these and other lots and garages can be viewed at http://www.utexas.edu/parking/maps.
Important note—Follow the directions of the ushers in neon green shirts or vests once you exit these garages. They are directing guests to the Erwin Center via the shortest distance.
Drop-off for mobility-impaired guests
The best option for mobility-impaired guests will be for drivers to turn into Lot 118 from the southbound frontage road and speak with the guard there for access.
Guests then will have the option of crossing the terrace to a door or proceeding down the sidewalk to the Red River doors. The Red River doors are better suited for some wheelchairs.
For drivers, the best option at that point will be to turn right onto Red River, right onto MLK, right onto the I-35 southbound frontage road, right onto 15th and then right at the second light onto Trinity Street. Drivers can then find space at the Health Center Garage on the right, at the state garage on the left or by proceeding to the Trinity Street garage on the right.
Red River between 15th and MLK is now open in both directions, but is prone to serious gridlock. Drivers are strongly urged to stay away from this area unless they are dropping off mobility-impaired guests who aren’t able to walk far.
