The Austin Collaborative for Mathematics Education (ACME) was an initiative begun in August 1997 to improve mathematics education in all AISD elementary and middle school classrooms by providing teachers with long term, high quality professional development. The Getting Ahead of the Need: Comprehensive Counseling for Elementary Schools grant was awarded by the Safe and Drug Free Schools Program through the Department of Education to improve elementary school counseling prevention and intervention services offered in the Austin Independent School District.
AISD used $13,541,075 federal Title I funds for 2001-2002 to serve low-income students and support district parent involvement and other grant activities.
The purpose of the federal Title VI, Class Size Reduction program is to reduce class sizes in grades K-3 to 18 or fewer students. Funds were used for recruiting, hiring, and training highly qualified teachers to raise student achievement through increased personal attention. Summer Opportunity to Accelerate Reading (SOAR) 2002 was AISD's summer reading program serving 2,251 students completing kindergarten through grade 2 in June 2002. Among students with valid reading scores, 86% made reading gains during the program.
