This report describes findings from the Austin Independent School District’s (AISD) Department of Leadership Development 2018–2019 evaluation. The purposes of the evaluation in 2018–2019 were to update the Department of Leadership Development theory of change (ToC) and logic model and to evaluate the implementation of the newly developed assistant principal (AP) and principal hiring processes designed to select a diverse group of equity-focused, effective novice leaders to meet the goal of creating a leadership pipeline that reflects AISD values and fosters a selection and development mindset.
Student enrollment in AISD has been steadily declining since the 2011–2012 school year. This report summarizes major changes in student enrollment by grade, race/ethnicity, program participation, and changes due to transfers.
Principal interviews indicate that more practical professional development opportunities for teachers and more strategic support from licensed professionals would better help schools care for students with trauma-related behavioral needs.
Telecommuting is currently used in many industries and is celebrated for fostering job satisfaction and increased productivity. However, telecommuting is not widely practiced in K-12 environments. Two departments in AISD implemented pilot telecommuting programs. This report presents survey results from these pilot implementation models and summarizes the lessons learned to better understand the challenges and best practices of implementation.

The Creative Learning Initiative (CLI) is a community-wide effort to bring creative learning and the arts to each and every student in Austin. Lead by MINDPOP, the City of Austin, and the Austin Independent School District (AISD), CLI designs systemic and sustainable programs that integrate creativity, creative teaching strategies, and the arts with classroom teaching, campus programming, and campus improvement. Evaluation findings suggest CLI implementation had a positive impact on the district, its teachers and the students it serves.
Research on creative learning shows that students attending arts-rich schools have higher levels of motivation and better academic and social success. Arts richness is measured in the Creative Campus profile reports, based on information gathered in the 2015-2016 Arts Inventory. The profile was developed and piloted in the Creative Learning Initiative (CLI) campuses over two years, but is relevant and now available for all AISD campuses. This report provides a summary of the district's gap analyses, Equity Self-Assessment Survey results, current research, and district action steps.
Standard Aggregate Reports (SAR) allow community-based service providers to access aggregate data (i.e., summary data for multiple individuals) about students participating in their programs. Using this system, service providers gain access to valuable information about the discipline, attendance, and academic achievement outcomes of the students they serve. At the same time, AISD can maintain compliance with federal and local regulations protecting the confidentially of individual-level student data while being responsive to agency data needs.
