Celebration of Juneteenth

President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that became effective on January 1, 1863. Slaves in Texas did not know they were freed until 2 years later, in 1865. Emancipation Day is celebrated on June 19 commemorating the day Texas learned of the abolition of slavery. In 1867, Austin, Texas began celebrating Juneteenth with a parade which has become a local tradition. 150 years later Juneteenth is celebrated at least in 40 other states besides Texas.
