Special Work Session (Sept. 9)

Continuation of the Discussion of the Development of Facility Master Plan Guiding Principles

The district has made a commitment to Austin voters to develop a Facility Master Plan (FMP) by June 30, 2014. Finalization of guiding principles by the Board of Trustees is the first step in the FMP development process. Two FMP Guiding Principles, “Health, Safety and Security” and “Academics,” were approved at the Aug. 27 regular meeting.

The board completed its discussion of draft Guiding Principles for “Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability” and “Communication and Community Engagement.” These will be placed on the Consent Agenda for the Sept. 30 meeting. A third Guiding Principle, “Protection of Financial Investment,” was not finalized and will continue to be discussed at upcoming board meetings.

Board Ad Hoc Community Engagement Committee Report

Ad Hoc Committee Chair Gina Hinojosa reported that the Ad Hoc Community Engagement Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at SPACE 12, 3121 E. 12th St., and 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, as part of the ACPTA meeting at Eastside Memorial High School.

The committee has drafted two small-group discussion questions that will be asked at the meetings: What would be important to you as we go through the FMP process? What information do you need to fully participate in the FMP process? The committee will review the responses to these questions and report back to the full board. The board agreed to change the committee’s charge to: “Recommend mechanisms for enhanced community participation and increased trust in district decision-making processes.”

Board Ad Hoc Committee on Site-Based Decision-Making and Processes Report

Ad Hoc Committee Chair Robert Schneider reported on the committee’s charge, scope of work, and timeline. District-wide meetings with Campus Advisory Committee members are being scheduled for late October and early November, and a meeting with the District Advisory Committee is scheduled Oct. 17 at the DAC retreat.  The committee will take and evaluate input from those meetings and make recommendations to the full board in late 2013 or early 2014. The name was changed to the Ad Hoc Committee on Policy and Process Review for Site-Based Decision-Making.
