Consideration of Annual Academic Facilities Recommendation (AAFR) — IDEA In-District Charter: College Preparation Partnership with AISD
The Board of Trustees approved the recommendation to enter into a contractual agreement with IDEA Public Schools to establish an in-district charter partnership with AISD by a vote of six to three.
For the 2012-2013 school year, IDEA will offer kindergarten through second grade and sixth grade at Allan Elementary School. In subsequent years, IDEA will expand each year, so that by 2018-2019, the program will serve students in kindergarten through fifth grade in the current Allan attendance zone and all students in the Eastside Memorial Vertical Team in sixth grade through 12th grade. Any remaining seats at IDEA will be available first to other students in the Eastside Memorial Vertical Team, then to students district-wide through a lottery system.
Students enrolled in pre-kindergarten and third grade through fifth grade who live in the current Allan attendance zone and do not choose to attend IDEA will be assigned to Govalle or Ortega elementary schools.
The proposal is one of six Annual Academic and Facilities Recommendations, five of which the Board approved Dec. 12.
In her remarks to the Board, Superintendent Meria Carstarphen said that IDEA would offer another option in AISD’s portfolio of choices for families, students and staff. In thanking the Trustees and others in the community for their contributions to the process, Dr. Carstarphen emphasized that this proposal is only one part of the many efforts to improve East Austin schools, and that she looked forward to continuing their shared work in the years ahead.
