Board Briefs: Work Session (May 13)

Consideration of Additional Citizens Communication in Relation to Superintendent Search

Trustees discussed adding Citizens Communication to additional board agendas to allow more public comment during the superintendent search. They agreed to add 30 minutes for Citizens Communication to the agenda for the June 2 Special Meeting.

Ad-Hoc Allan Facility Committee Proposal Options

Interim Superintendent Dr. Paul Cruz and Allen Weeks, of Austin Voices, presented the recommendations of a committee that was formed at the suggestion of the board to develop specific proposals and costs for the future use of the Allan Facility. This followed the presentation at the Board Work Session on Jan. 13, at which Dr. Cruz and Mr. Weeks presented feedback from three meetings that were held to gather input from community.

In 15 hours of meetings, the Ad-Hoc Allan Facility Committee developed a proposal to phase in several programs over a three-year period, as follows:

  • Phase 1 (2014–15): Early Childhood Center with a Preschool Programs for Children With Disabilities inclusion model. Early childhood programs run by external partners also would be on campus.
  • Phase 2 (2015–16): Develop a STEM Resource Center at the Allan Facility to support STEM programming in the Eastside Memorial Vertical Team.
  • Phase 3 (2016–17): Examine the need for a “limited footprint, innovative and high-achieving” middle school focused on health sciences/ecology and habitat. Research would occur over a two-year period, with possible opening in the 2016–17 school year.

Facility Master Plan Presentation

Trustees discussed a staff-developed preliminary draft of the Facility Master Plan.  Proposed changes included shortening the executive summary and moving reference data to the appendices. A revised draft, incorporating trustee comments, is scheduled to be published online for public comment on May 15. Trustees are scheduled to again discuss the FMP at the June 2 Board Work Session, and may take action on the FMP at the June 16 Regular Board Meeting.

Finalize Request for Proposal Scoring and Select Executive Search Firms to Meet with the Board

Out of four proposals received, trustees selected two executive search firms to interview for possible selection to provide support for the superintendent search. According to the district’s timeline, the board could possibly take action on the selection of a search firm at a Special Meeting on May 28 so that the firm can begin work in early June.
