Board Briefs: Special Meeting for Recognitions (April 21)

At a special meeting for recognitions, the AISD Board of Trustees honored the following students and teachers who distinguished themselves in athletics, career and technical education, academic competitions, and fine arts.

Recognition of Dr. Meria Carstarphen for Her Many Contributions to the Austin Independent School District

Trustees recognized outgoing Superintendent Dr. Meria Carstarphen for her service to AISD, citing the increase in graduation rates, the movement toward a culture that emphasizes the whole child, improvements in attendance and programs to prepare students for college and careers as examples of her leadership.

Junior Marines

The Bedichek Middle School Junior Marines were recognized for winning the Overall Grand Champion award at The National Middle School Cadet Corps Drill Competition. This is the second time in three years that they have won this prestigious championship.

2013 World Rowing Junior Championship Competition

Austin High School senior Kendall Brewer was recognized for winning a silver medal as a member of the USA National Team in the 2013 World Rowing Junior Championship Competition held in Trakai, Lithuania.

Basketball

Crockett High School basketball team captain Jordyn Holmes was recognized for being one of 20 players in Texas named to the All-State Basketball Team by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. She also was named District 26-4A Most Valuable Player.

At the UIL State Swimming and Diving Meet on Feb. 21–22, these athletes placed second through sixth:

Anderson High School

Joshua Tomazin placed fourth in the boys 50-yard freestyle and sixth in the boys 100-yard freestyle. He was named to the 5A All-State Team in three events and was named 2014 District Swimmer of the Year.
Lyle Markman placed fifth in the boys 1-meter diving. He was the Region IV champion, qualified for the 5A All-State Team and will be considered for the All-America Team this summer.

Austin High School

Laine Reed placed second in the girls 200-yard freestyle and third in the girls 100-yard freestyle. She has been the 5A District female Swimmer of the Year for the past two years, on the first Team All State for the past three years, and an All-America in the 100 and 200 freestyle for the past three years.

Bowie High School

Zachary Cootes placed fourth in the boys 500-yard freestyle. In addition to UIL, Zachary has competed at the sectional, Junior Nationals and the Nationally Touring Swimming Grand Prix. Zachary is currently positioned to qualify for the Olympic Trials.

McCallum High School

Jessie Wooley-MacMath placed fourth place in the girls 500-yard freestyle, fifth in the girls 200-yard freestyle and is on the 4A All-State Team. She has been swimming competitively since she was 8 years old. Jessie is a junior and this is her third year swimming on the McCallum swim team. Last year, she earned the bronze medal in the 500-yard freestyle.

Wrestling

These wrestlers were recognized for placing third, fourth or fifth at the UIL State Wrestling Meet on Feb. 14–15 at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.

Anna Becerra competed in the girls 102-pound weight class.
Austin Boles competed in the boys 113- pound weight class.

Jacob Valadez placed third in the 285- pound boys weight class, with a record of 27-2.

Stefan Moreno placed third in the 126- pound boys weight class.

Naomi Roch competed in the girls 148- pound weight class.

Jiro Deloach placed fourth in the boys 120-lb. weight class with a record of 36-7.

Texas Youth and Government State Conference

The Board recognized the Austin High School Youth & Government Club for winning the Distinguished Delegation Award at the 2014 Texas Youth & Government State Conference. The award was based on student performances in such areas as Mock Legislature, Model United Nations and Mock Trial.

Texas Forensic Association State Tournament

The Board recognized the Austin High School Policy Debate Team for placing second out of 114 teams in the state competition and for placing third and fifth place out of a total of 228 contestants.
