Trustees Recognize Two AISD High Schools for 60th Anniversaries
Austin ISD’s Board of Trustees recognized two AISD campuses for 60 years of service to students and families during the board’s regular meeting Nov. 25.
The board passed resolutions to honor McCallum High School and Travis High School, which are celebrating their 60th anniversaries in the 2013-14 school year.
Travis High School opened its doors in 1953 to more than 1,000 students and has graduated 16,242 students. The school is expected to graduate approximately 260 students in its 60th graduating class in May 2014.
The school was named after William B. Travis, who was a lieutenant colonel in the Texas Army and died in the Battle of the Alamo.
McCallum High School opened in 1953 to more than 1,300 students, has 1,622 students this school year and is expected to graduate more than 400 students in its 60th graduating class.
The school was named after Arthur N. McCallum Sr., who was superintendent of AISD for 39 years from 1903 to 1942.
