McCallum Knights Head to State Quarterfinals with Win Over Alice Coyotes

The McCallum Knights continue to write history thanks to their unprecedented success in 2017.

On Saturday, the Knights avenged a 1966 playoff loss to the Alice Coyotes by claiming the regional title with a 33-8 victory.

"After coming out at halftime, I just thought we played harder and wanted it more," said senior quarterback Max Perez, who tossed a 47-yard touchdown to give the Knights a 14-8 lead as time expired in the first half.

The win moves the Knights to 13-0 on the season and advances the team to the UIL State Quarterfinal playoff round. McCallum will return to the Alamodome this Saturday for its first-ever appearance in the fourth round.

"The kids work hard every day," said head coach Charles Taylor following McCallum's win. "They've been around four years. It's just not a year, a day, it's a program."

But the task is tough against the fourth-ranked team in the state, the Corpus Christi Calallen Wildcats (13-0).

The Knights and Wildcats kick off at noon, with the winner advancing to the Class 5A Division 2 state semifinal.

There, McCallum will once again have an opportunity to avenge a 2005 postseason loss to a familiar foe. Calallen, the eventual state champion that season, upended McCallum 13-10.
