AISD Encourages Veterans to Apply for Belated Diplomas
Austin ISD awards belated high school diplomas to veterans whose service prevented them from finishing high school.
Veterans who are eligible have served in World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, Iraq War, War in Afghanistan, or any other formally declared war by the U.S.
Eligible veterans, or those acting on behalf of a deceased veteran, may obtain a diploma application form by contacting AISD’s Department of School, Family and Community Education at 512-414-0112.
The completed application form must be returned with a copy of the veteran’s discharge notification (DD Form 214) to the AISD Baker Center, 3908 Avenue B, Austin, Texas 78751 by Oct. 14.
Since 2002, AISD has awarded belated diplomas to veterans. Beginning in 2005, the Texas Legislature expanded the diploma program to a veteran who:
- Is an honorably discharged member of the armed forces of the U.S.;
- Was scheduled to graduate from high school after 1940 and before 1975, or after 1989; and
- Left school after completing grade 6 or higher, but before graduating from high school to serve in any formally declared war by the United States Congress, military engagement authorized by United Nations Security Council resolution and funded by the U.S. Congress or conflict authorized by the president of the U.S. under the War Powers Resolution of 1973 (50 United States Code §15421 et. seq.)
