McCallum Dance Department presents Transitions November 13 and 14
October 30, 2009 - The McCallum Fine Arts production of the fall dance concert Transitions will premiere at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 13 in the McCallum Theater, located at 5600 Sunshine Drive. The show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 14.
The show will feature works by guest choreographers Grace Holmes, Lauren Jacobs, and Sophi Siragusa. It will also include a student work, Mixed Up, by junior dance major Kate Van Dyke. The highlight of the show will be the choreography by the new McCallum Dance Directors Brazie Adamez and Mary Chase. Mrs. Adamez has been teaching at McCallum for the last five years, and accepted the promotion to Director in August, when Ms. Chase was also hired to replace former director Barbara Javors. Ms. Chase has been teaching at the University of Texas at Austin and Tapestry for the last three years.
Transitions will present a broad range of dance styles, allowing the dance majors the opportunity to work in many genres. Guest artist Lauren Jacobs, of the Rastabouts Dance Company in Austin, will perform a new Hip-Hop piece. Grace Holmes, the new Tapestry Academy Director, returns to McCallum to perform a contemporary ballet to the music of “The Doors”. A McCallum dance alum, Sophi Siragusa, has set a quartet that premiered as a duet in the McCallum Dance Benefit in September. Mary Chase is reconstructing two works, Home (2004) and Briefcased (2008). Briefcased premiered in the first Austin Big Range Dance Festival in 2008, to the music of former Austinite Andy Hadaway, which then went on to tour in the Young Tanzsommer Festival in Austria. Mrs. Adamez will premiere two new Hip-Hop pieces and a contemporary dance whose popular music will surely be a big hit. Tickets for the performances are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
