COMMUNITY ENCOURAGED TO NOMINATE CHOICES
FOR NAME OF NEW EASTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL
June 19, 2008 - What should the Austin School District name its newest high school?
The AISD Board of Trustees invites community members to submit nominations for the name of the new Eastside high school that will open on Monday, August 25, on the campus that was formerly the Johnston High School campus.
“We are creating a high school that will serve students in new and unique ways,” AISD Board President Mark Williams said. “Naming a school is a lasting decision that reflects District heritage and values, and — in this case — the identity and mission of this new campus. We value community input in that process.” The criteria for the naming of district facilities include the following:
Nominators are encouraged to provide a succinct description of the nominees’ contributions, why they are important, and any pertinent history that should be considered. While no fixed standard is imposed, supporting documents of no more than five pages should be sufficient. Petitions will not be considered as a criterion for consideration. The Board’s new policy prohibits the selling of names for any district facility; however, donations may be considered in the naming of district facilities. Nominations may be mailed to: Office of Planning and Community Relations Austin Independent School District 1111 West Sixth Street Austin, TX 78703-5399 Or, nominations may be submitted online at the District’s website http://www.austinisd.org/schools/eastside/nomination.phtml The deadline to submit nominations is Sunday, July 20. Trustees will select the school’s name on Monday, August 11, and the new high school will open for the 2008-2009 school year on Monday, August 25. The new high school will enroll students from across the Austin School District, with transportation provided. The recruitment of students is now underway. [ Go Back ] |
