Certification requirements for the position of Counselor in the Austin Independent School District are established by the State Board of Educator Certification. Individuals wishing to be employed as a Counselor must meet either the requirements for a permit or a certificate.

For Permit:

  • 24 Graduate Hours with at least 12 Graduate Hours in Guidance and Counseling
  • A valid Texas Teaching Certificate at the level of the assignment
  • 3 years of teaching experience in accredited K-12 school
  • A deficiency plan from an accredited graduate school documenting remaining course requirements
  • Permit will be requested by the Human Resources Dept. of AISD

  • Master's Degree
  • Successful completion of a school counselor preparation program
  • 2 years Teaching Experience (effective 9/1/02)
  • A passing score on the Counselor TExES exam
