Certification requirements for the position of Counselor in the Austin Independent
School District are established by the State Board of Educator
Certification. Individuals wishing to be employed as a Counselor must
meet either the requirements for a permit or a certificate.
For Permit:
- 24 Graduate Hours with at least 12 Graduate Hours in Guidance and Counseling
- A valid Texas Teaching Certificate at the level of the assignment
- 3 years of teaching experience in accredited K-12 school
- A deficiency plan from an accredited graduate school documenting remaining course requirements
- Permit will be requested by the Human Resources Dept. of AISD
- Paperwork required:

- Master's Degree
- Successful completion of a school counselor preparation program
- 2 years Teaching Experience (effective 9/1/02)
- A passing score on the Counselor TExES exam
