Facility Use and Boundary Task Force

CHARGE

The Facility Use and Boundary Task Force is charged with assisting the Superintendent: (1) to establish parameters for ideal student assignment configuration that supports student success; and (2) to develop proposals that maximize the utilization of AISD facilities.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

The Facility Use and Boundary Task Force will use these ideal parameters to develop specific criteria to guide and to evaluate boundary and building-use decisions as new schools are scheduled to begin operation. In doing this, the task force will address the following issues:

  • School size recommendations.
  • Capacity targets to ensure efficient operation of facilities.
  • Specific proposals for use of underutilized facilities.
  • Recommended mix of racial-ethnic and socio-economic diversity and proximity of students to their assigned schools.
  • Stability targets for the duration of assignments with an eye toward minimizing student movement.
  • Distance, travel time and safety of students getting to and from school.
  • Tracking from level to level and alignment of feeders.
  • Options for transfer, voluntary assignment to specialized programs or magnets.
  • Projected growth and the need for future schools.

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE BOUNDARIES THAT WERE APPROVED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR BLAZIER AND OVERTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND GARCIA MIDDLE SCHOOL:

* The Olympic Heights neighborhood would remain assigned to Menchaca Elementary School, for the 2007-2008 school year. In order to address concerns from those students, who understood they would be reassigned in the 2007-2008 school year to Baranoff Elementary School, Baranoff, Menchaca and Student Services staff will assist parents in obtaining an approved transfer for the 2007-2008 school year. Olympic Heights students, electing to remain in Menchaca Elementary School, would continue to receive transportation services, however, those students, who elect to attend Baranoff Elementary School, will not be provided transportation.

The reassignment of the Olympic Heights students from Menchaca to Baranoff goes into effect in the 2008-2009 school year.

GARCIA MIDDLE SCHOOL BOUNDARY PROPOSALS

On March 5, 2007, the Board of Trustees approved the reassignment of pre-kindergarten students from Wooldridge Elementary School to the Lucy Read Pre-Kindergarten Demonstration School.
