At the Dec. 12 meeting, the Board voted to approve five recommendations, including addressing north central overcrowding.

Below is a simple explanation of the impact to Webb Middle School:

  • Create a pre-kindergarten through 8th grade model at Webb MS and reassign a portion of Barrington ES attendance zone to Webb MS, retaining the same boundaries for the existing middle school students and growing the model with specific grade levels at a time as appropriate.
  • Move 6th grade students at Barrington and Brown elementary schools to Webb.

The district is dedicated to providing families with timely and relevant updates about the IDEA roll-out. As more information becomes available, parents will be notified and this site updated. For more information please view answers to our frequently asked questions (Spanish).

Why is the district making these changes?

AISD is committed to providing a quality education for all students in a healthy and safe environment. At this time, there are significant deficiencies in seating capacity for students in north central elementary schools and a surplus of seats in north central middle schools. By addressing overcrowding issues, the district will be better able to support current and future students.

How will Webb grow to accommodate newly designated students?

In 2012-13, Webb Middle School will continue to receive in-coming 6th grade students from Barrington and Brown elementary schools. Webb also will add pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and 1st grade from Barrington (with the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students remaining at Barrington.)

The school also may phase in a pre-kindergarten – 8th grade model in the future, provided there is space at Webb.

Will pre-kindergarten students interact with the older kids on campus?

The safety and care of our pre-kindergarten students is a top priority for AISD, therefore there will be little to no interaction between pre-kindergarten students and middle school students.

Webb is working to provide a designated place at the back of the main building which will be a separate facility. The pre-kindergarten students will be using some of Webb’s facilities. The administration is working closely with school’s staff to ensure the pre-kindergarten schedules do not overlap with middle school schedules.

Will transportation be provided for students who have been reassigned to Webb?

The district will provide shuttle buses to transport students from their home schools to their new location in the morning, and back to their home schools in the afternoon. Students who reside more than two miles from their home school will continue to receive transportation services to and from their home schools.

Parents can also transport students directly to their new assignment school.

What measures are being taken to ensure the safety of pre-kindergarten students taking the shuttle?

Bus monitors are provided on all pre-kindergarten shuttles. Additional staff will help pre-kindergarten students getting on and off the pre-kindergarten shuttles.

Is there a schedule of upcoming meetings?

The administration is working closely with north central school principals to schedule parent and community meetings.Parents are invited to attend the schools’ CAC and PTA meetings to ask questions and learn more about the changes designed to relieve overcrowding in north central Austin.

Please note that meeting dates are subject to change and meetings may be added. Please contact your school to confirm dates before attending.
