On December 19, 2011, the Board voted to approve the Annual Academic and Facilities Recommendation proposing an in-district charter partnership with IDEA Public Schools. The new program is a partnership between the Austin school district and IDEA Public Schools to offer a college preparatory curriculum that prepares students for success in college and citizenship by developing academic, social and leadership skills needed to succeed in a four-year college. It is still an AISD school.

Starting next school year, families who live in the Martin Middle School attendance zone, including Allan Elementary School, will have a new school option at the Allan campus. In the 2012-13 school year, the new program at Allan will offer pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades 1, 2 and 6. Over the next few years, the program will expand to serve students in grades pre-K through 12 at the current Allan Elementary Campus and at Eastside Memorial High School at the Johnston Campus. Students who graduate from the program will receive a diploma from AISD.

The district is dedicated to providing families with timely and relevant updates about the IDEA roll-out. As more information becomes available, parents will be notified and this site updated. Please continue to check back.

How will this affect students in the area who will be in 6th grade next year?

Students from Allan, Allison, Brooke, Govalle, Metz, Ortega and Zavala elementary schools who will enter 6th grade next school year will be assigned to the new program at Allan. Sixth grade students who choose to "opt out" of the new program will be assigned to Martin Middle School. Any student who lives in the Martin attendance zone will be able to attend the new program and will receive transportation. If there are more students than seats available at the new program, the district will hold a lottery and assign students to the new program.

What is the process for opting out of the new program?

Families affected by the new program should have received a February letter from the district, via regular U.S. mail, explaining the process for opting out. Students will have until March 9 to notify the school district if they wish to opt out of the new program.
