On December 19, 2011, the Board voted to approve the Annual Academic and Facilities Recommendation proposing an in-district charter partnership with IDEA Public Schools. The new program is a partnership between the Austin school district and IDEA Public Schools to offer a college preparatory curriculum that prepares students for success in college and citizenship by developing academic, social and leadership skills needed to succeed in a four-year college. It is still an AISD school.
Starting next school year, families who live in the Martin Middle School attendance zone, including Allan Elementary School, will have a new school option at the Allan campus. In the 2012-13 school year, the new program at Allan will offer pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades 1, 2 and 6. Over the next few years, the program will expand to serve students in grades pre-K through 12 at the current Allan Elementary Campus and at Eastside Memorial High School at the Johnston Campus. Students who graduate from the program will receive a diploma from AISD. Below please find important information for families about the new partnership as well as background on the approved recommendation.
The district is dedicated to providing Allan families with timely and relevant updates about the IDEA roll-out. As more information becomes available, parents will be notified and this site updated. Please continue to check back.
How will this affect students who live in the Allan Elementary School attendance zone next year?
Students who will be in prekindergarten, kindergarten and grades 1, 2 and 6 next year who live in the Allan attendance area will be assigned to the new program. The new program at the Allan campus will not offer grades 3, 4 and 5 next year. Students who will be in grades 3, 4 and 5 next year who live in the Allan attendance area will be assigned to either Govalle or Ortega elementary school, depending on where they live. Students who live in the western part of the Allan attendance zone will be assigned to Govalle, and students who live in the eastern portion of the Allan attendance zone will be assigned to Ortega.
For each of the following three years, the new program at Allan will expand to include one more grade level, so that by the 2015-16 school year, it will offer pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. Then, all elementary-aged students in the Allan attendance zone will be assigned to the new program.
Elementary students who live in the Allan attendance zone and do not want to attend the new program will be able to "opt out" and will be assigned to either Govalle or Ortega, depending on where they live.
What is the process for opting out of the new program?
Families affected by the new program should have received a February letter from the district, via regular U.S. mail, explaining the process for opting out. Students will have until March 9 to notify the school district if they wish to opt out of the new program.
Does this affect the Austin school district’s transfer deadline and policy?
No. The district’s normal transfer deadline is still January 31. There are no changes to the diversity choice option under the district’s Policy FC (Local) for the 2012-13 school year. Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 who live in the Allan attendance area and are assigned to attend Govalle or Ortega will be allowed to exercise their diversity choice option through their 5th grade year.
