District Seeks to Award Diplomas to War Vets

War veterans who attended school in the Austin Independent School District but did not earn a high school diploma as a result of their service to their country, may be eligible to receive a high school diploma from the district.

AISD is awarding belated high school diplomas to veterans from the following wars:

  • World War II
  • Korean War
  • Vietnam War
  • Persian War
  • Iraq War
  • War in Afghanistan
  • or any other war formally declared by the United States, military engagement authorized by the United States Congress, or conflict authorized by the president of the United States under the War Powers Resolution of 1973.

AISD will award diplomas in a special veterans "graduation" ceremony as part of the district’s Veterans Day observance on Monday, Nov. 12

To participate in the Veterans Day graduation ceremony, veterans must complete an application and submit a copy of their veteran’s discharge notification to the AISD BAKER CENTER, 3908 Avenue B, Austin, TX, 78751 by Monday, Oct. 1. Otherwise, application can be returned at any time and eligible veterans will receive a diploma in the mail.

Eligible veterans, or those acting on behalf of a deceased veteran, may obtain a diploma application form by contacting the Department of School, Family and Community Education at 414-0112.

The district has been awarding belated diplomas to World War II veterans since 2002, and to other veterans beginning in 2005. An eligible applicant is one who:

  • is an honorably discharged member of the armed forces;
  • was scheduled to graduate high school after 1940 and before 1975, or after 1989; and
  • left school after completing grade 6 or higher but before graduating from high school to serve.
