Athletes Eligibility Requirements
"Intellectual disabilities [mental retardation] refers to substantial limitations. It is characterized by significantly sub-average intellectual functioning, existing concurrently with related limitations in two or more of the following applicable adaptive skill areas: communication, self-care, home living, social skills, community use, self-direction, health and safety, functional academic, leisure and work. Intellectual disabilities [mental retardation] manifests before age 18." The above is the definition of intellectual disabilities [mental retardation] issued by the American Association of Mental Retardation (AAMR) in 1992. This definition represents the first revision since 1983, and indicates a significant change in the way people with intellectual disabilities [mental retardation] are viewed. According to the AAMR, the definition is based on four assumptions which consider intellectual, cultural, communicative and behavioral differences; and assumes that, with appropriate support, functioning will often improve. Limitations coexist with strengths and are only one part of an individual's overall environment. The definition emphasizes abilities and capabilities rather than the disability, and focuses on individual growth and development. The definition concurs with Special Olympics Texas' commitment to excellence and providing the best possible training for its athletes. An athlete must be eight years old and older in order to compete in local and area competitions. An athlete must be 12 years old in order to participate in the state competitions. Special Olympics' range of services, from the Motor Activities Training Program to Unified Sports®, addresses the needs of individuals at their current functional level. Special Olympics is a valuable support system that recognizes differences and celebrates individual accomplishments. |
