How Parents Can Help
Talk with your children about math. Ask your children to describe the mathematics they are learning in class. Become mathematical problemsolvers with your children. When math problems arise that are interesting to your child, work together to find solutions. Help your children be thoughtful about math by asking questions like "How did you come up with that answer?" Asking children to explain their problem solving strategies helps them make sense of what they are doing. Involve your children in your daily use of mathematics such as planning the school lunch budget, balancing a checkbook, calculating the travel time for a weekend trip, and estimating food portions.
The Brown family is going to Disney Land. The first day they drove 200 miles. If Disneyland is 1300 miles from their house, how much farther do they have to drive? Send us the answer by clicking here. If you were going to Disneyland from your house and you drove 200 miles each day how long would it take you to get there? Above all, let your children know that you believe they can be successful in math. |
