Mission Statement Students in the Austin Independent School District English/Language Arts program will acquire the literacy and communication skills necessary to be productive, successful, and fulfilled citizens. Language Arts Resources (Including Alignment Plan) Curriculum, instruction and assessment must be clearly linked when delivering effective, differentiated language arts instruction. The alignment of curriculum, instruction and assessment can be clearly seen with the "what, how, why" circles. The "what" in language arts are the standards, curriculum content, lesson goals, basic and thinking skills, and connection to other content areas. The "how" in language arts are the balanced literacy components which speak to learning settings, instructional methods, flexible grouping, and type of modeling. The "why" in language arts is our knowledge of our learners, the principles of learning, and the use of formal and informal assessments to inform our instruction. When the "what," the "how," and the "why" are explicitly linked, effective instruction is sure to result in high student achievement.
